Seattle Symphony conducted by/Sinfónica de Seattle dirigida por Gerard Schwarz.

I. Passacaglia and Fugue (0:00)
II. Chorale and Toccata (12:25)

William Schuman was the most prominent symphonist in the United States after Chadwick and Ives. While its music is not as progressive as Ives’, Schuman collects American popular rhythms and melodies to make original compositions. His Symphony No. 3 is a fine example of it: he takes jazz and blues idioms mingled along with academic forms of composition.

This seems a most interesting symphony. It's very well recorded. I'll listen to more of Schuman's work.

I find this recording to be finely crafted and technically -- sonically and instrumentally, to the 1970 Bernstein recording. Schwarz benefits from another 40 years of thought on the relationships Schuman is living through. Schwarz is less caught up in the Copland / roy Harris aspects of this wonderful piece. The recording of this performance is masterful in the subtle technical aspects of gently bringing out the interplay of large ensemble, small ensemble, sectional and solo writing found in the score. Schwarz gets full synchronization from the ensemble while providing each voice within the ensemble its own 'space'. And this is a work that is about collective and individual space.

The trumpet solo in the Chorale at 13:44 is all but perfection.

My first exposure to Schuman was this symphony many years ago. Thanks!
