Years ago, in another village, the 75 year old newly retired cabinet maker(did everything and anything from coffins to putting up barn roofs, ) told me the first thing new apprentices would do in France was make all their molding planes, blades included...I bought about antique 30 planes in a garage sale years ago for 40 Euros. Just nice to have them in the shop to show folks....cheers...rr Normandy, Fra.

It appears fairly easy to make a float, There is a guy building an Antikythera mechanism on you tube, and he shows (throughout the videos), how to make files, and other ancient hand tools of that nature. Yes, a pain, but it's not about saving money, it's about building a custom tool for specific tasks. God bless my father, and you. I have a bunch of 'odd-ball' tools, some of which I had no idea of what they were used for, until I watched your videos, a float is one of those. Of the several I have, one has curved teeth, and the surface is also convex, (I still have to figure that out).

Can you do a video sometime showing how to carve some different shapes into the sole?

Why not cut the rabbit on top for clearance and then use a crosscut saw to establish the bed and wedge planes to help facilitate removing the material?

Just a thought, how about laminating the bottom after making the opening so that you can use chisels from both directions initially?

Shots, like the bit at 18:40, would work a lot better with an additional light source. Can't see much there except darkness. An LED flashlight would suffice.
