Thousands are displaced and hundreds rescued in the aftermath of cyclone Gabrielle in Hawke's Bay

Evacuees have poured into Hastings after a night of rescues and close escapes.

Those plucked from the floodwaters in the dark now struggling to comprehend the scale of the loss, but thankful to be safe and dry.

At least 9000 people have been displaced across the region, with many areas cut off by raging rivers.

The northern Hawke's Bay town of Wairoa is urgently requesting assistance amid fears their food, water and fuel supplies could run out in "the next few days", mayor Craig Little said on Wednesday.

50 roads across the district are closed and all the schools in central Hawkes Bay are shut.

In a lot of isolated places in nz the marae is the only facility designed to handle a large crowd. Marae have kitchens, cutlery, mattresses, abolution blocks. The government dont have these facilities.

Thanks Guys " We had the NZL Defense force come in to evacuate People's in Super large Choppers as well as Guys with their own Choppers rescuing people from the roofs of their Home's . Gabriel Hit our Coastal Area's just on High tide 🌊 the Ocean came in with full force as with the force of the Rain everything swelled in Minutes . 4000 people evacuated, I live in Hastings everything is fine but drive 10mins North an that's as far as you go . For now anyways.
