Always keep your eyes on people when you've got the hood open on the vehicle..especially if there is more than one person

That sucks, Ben! Best suggestion I've seen to help with lots of this stuff; set up the meet/sale at the local Police Department. Most will ill intent don't show up or find an excuse for why they aren't interested anymore. Helps to go make friends with local LEOs as well.
