In this recording I alternated between the sustain and 4th harmonic pedal. The harmonic pedal was invented by Denis de La Rochefordière.

I played this at a competition. Apparently no one beyond the 3rd row heard me (I followed the p and pp dynamics too well). Ended up with a disappointing second. That was about 16 years ago and have never listened to the piece until today.

That Japanese sound you guys are hearing is the major pentatonic scale (which is Chinese). I didn't take time to analyze it but I'm about 99% sure just by the sound.

If I'm not wrong, despite the key signature being B-flat major, the first B-flat appears at 0:56

Try to use just a bit less sustain to make it sound more countoured
