Before flight, the pilots must be certain that the fuel they intend to uplift is free of mainly water and of course other unwanted sediments and that it is of the right colour too. Many accidents have occurred when the wrong type of fuel has been loaded or contaminated fuel is loaded resulting in engine failures. It’s an important pre-flight check. The refuelling agent must sample the fuel usually at least a litre, whirl it round the sample container to allow mixing so that water can be seen as it separates from the fuel due to the different densities. Once this is verified, refuelling can commence. Know the colour of your fuel too! Many piston engine incidents have occurred when jet fuel was loaded instead of Avgas, and vice versa!
