Wintersun - The Forest Seasons Analysis and Review

Here it is, as requested, by analysis of the recent album by Finnish Metal band Wintersun. Crossing from familiar pagan/folk technical death metal territory to classic black metal and doom, The Forest Seasons will likely please fans of broader metal but disappoint those who really want Wintersun to continue making material that is similar to their debut. I give you my break down of the 4 epic songs in terms of performance, composition, production, and general effect, as well as what format I think fits the album best.

I forgot to talk about Lyrics in this video - They work, and are very effective in a few songs (especially "Loneliness -winter"). They are nature-based and a definite "pagan" feeling to me. They retread a little ground from before with word choice, but overall I think they fit.

Great review! You are well informed unlike some other reviewers I have seen.

Hey man, I really enjoyed your review, I enjoyed this album too. There is another Band that is not really similar to Wintersun in term of sound but their compositions are really impressing. The band is Ne Obliviscaris and the album is Citadel (they incorporate elements of Death metal, Black Metal, Jazz, Classical and Avant garde music.

Forest that Weeps is vanilla Ensiferum it almost hurts. That's a good thing.

I can understand the desire for the style in the self-titled album, but I understand where Jari is coming from. I've written stories and music before, just to fill that creative itch and help with bouts of depression. I can't imagine going back to what I've written before when I get the urge to write again. It just wouldn't feel right.

There are certain musicians that just grab me with their riffs, and Jari has always been one of them. I listen to the tracks and think, oh man "X" would sound awesome! Then they actually do "X." Always makes me smile.

I think it captures the frozen north vibe very well, and I do know a little about that being from the north in America. Kai's not being there did suck, but overall I enjoyed the album. I've recently backed off from metal... but other bands such as Amorphis, Symphony X, Sonata Arctica and Katatonia still provide good vibes.

Also I was a little surprised to hear Jari was influenced by Stratovarius in a recent promotion video. But it does show through on this record quite a bit.

This album is 10/10 and that's coming from someone who hates clean singing in his metal
