Field Music - Not When You're In Love (Official Video)

Directed by Andy Martin

Watching the clock in a hotel bar
Turn it off! Turn it off! Make it stop!
Another round, another word
A stare so hard
It’s easy to ignore
But NOT when you’re in love

Curving up the Regent’s Street
Kings Cross to Queen’s
Counting out the stops, missing mine
Do you know what I mean?
Anywhere you need, name your place
We can shoot the shit
Staying in / staying out
It’s all the same to me
Taking your time
Keeping on or keeping off the wine
But not “when you’re in love”

Passing the green
Tennis courts in your jeans
The trees bow down for you
And it’s a wonderful thing
Like drops of rain
These things, they fall away
But not when “you’re in love”

Well it’s early doors
Nowhere to go
Even the St. of Clayton St. is closed
Now you’re flagging a cab and it’s all too soon for that
Well I couldn’t care less, it’s easy to leave
But not when you’re “In Love”

Now you’re taking a walk up the Great North Road
Compliments get you everywhere but not here
Don’t look! Don’t touch! Leave the fire alone!
But it’s not in the English language
And it’s not “When you’re in love”

You’re checking up, you’re checking In
Watching from a distance
Or not, when you’re in love?

You’re checking up, you’re checking again
Watching from a distance
Oh! Not when you’re in love!

I feel like I get ever so slightly smarter each time I hear a new Field Music tune. I was incredibly stupid to begin with, but the extra few braincells have been nice to have around.

I fucking LOVE this band so much.

I love that we got three FM albums in a little over three years. This one’s really growing on me. Cracking video!

I'm currently in Love with this band though they don't know it yet. I can't get enought of them. The Brewis brothers are interviewed on Ep 92 of the Sodajerker Podcast which is a musicians dream. I think Liz Corney the pianist and harmonist brings so much to the sound. She is the George Harrison of Field Music! There I said it.

For me, this song is a bit more of a thinker and has a sense of unresolved tension throughout (probably due to the percussion on top of the trap set tempo). I'm going to play it again several more times throughout the day and let it simmer on the brainpan because it's more complicated than most pop I listen to normally. The two vocal lines that happen mid-song are handled nicely as well. Always pushing boundaries I think, eh lads?!
