This is Part 1 of a four-part series that focuses on the Chinese history that happened in one of China's oldest provinces. In Part 1 we take a look at the lay of the land, the mythical beginnings, the neolithic cultures of Peiligang, Yangshao, Longshan, and Erlitou.

We also take the offramp to look at a couple of the more well-known Henan dishes. We'll get as far as the Xia and Shang dynasties and a little of the Western Zhou.

Great! I was lucky to visit some of these sites Henan a couple years ago to visit the most ancient of capitals. The Yin ruins were a definite bucket list item. Also seeing the Jiahu flute and Jiahu proto-writing on turtle shells in Zhengzhou Museum was a dream come true.

It's definitely more helpful when you listen to this podcast with a good map of Henan in front of you...

Are you planning on doing a podcast on different provinces? I think that'd be very interesting since I've learned a lot from your podcast on Henan

Thank you for these in-depth episodes focusing on the different provinces/ micro-regions (although, yes, they're bigger -- & certainly more populated -- than most modern European countries LOL). We Chinese know next to nothing about our neighbouring provinces & their cultures/ histories!

Of neolithic pottery, I liked Yangshao culture's pottery the best with its beautiful black and orange colors which influence stretched as far as Banpo in Xi'an but quite common in Henan.

❤️ your podcast, I learn so much about China. Wondering you will cover the Taiping Rebellion one day. 🤔 Like your style better than Dan Carlin. 😊

"If you include Taiwan". Most Taiwanese probably don't like to be included in a list of PRC provinces.

Nothing was written during the Shang to my knowledge about the Xia so making Erlingtou as the Xia is extremely problematic. The earliest I know of these historical myths are not extant until the Han dynasty until the records such as the Bamboo Annals and Record of the Grand Historian. Many centuries had passed so are currently no more than folktales or Chinese hyper-nationalism and not based in archeological science. This could change but currently this is the state of the archeology.
