Genesis 36 is primarily a genealogical chapter in the Bible that focuses on the lineage of Esau, the elder son of Isaac and the twin brother of Jacob.

Esau, who is also known as Edom, settled in the hill country of Seir, moving away from his brother Jacob due to the wealth each had accumulated. The region where Esau and his descendants settled is also known as Edom, and his descendants are called the Edomites.

The chapter lists Esau's wives and his sons, including Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. Each of these sons became chiefs of their respective clans.

The chapter also details the sons of Seir the Horite, the original inhabitants of the land where Esau settled. These Horite clans were eventually displaced by the clans descended from Esau.
