In this video, I take a quick look at Pop!_OS, an Ubuntu-based distro that is created by the good folks at System76. It uses the GNOME desktop environment and is primarily aimed for folks running System76 hardware.

I agree with your concerns especially having gparted in the live OS is very important. One thing that is very important to me is that I always need to know where I am in my Desktop environment. I use distros that invoke a list of desktops so that I can quickly change desktops or create them on the fly when I middle mouse click. xfce has this as does lxde. I'm using sparky minimal GUI with two tint2 panels ( I created one as a dock which works great!!), and openbox and I love the simplicity of it and the ease of getting around my computer. No fluff. That's what I look for in distros. Stay out of my way and let me get my work done without all the bling. Make sense. Great video as usual!!

According to the distro's website, Pop_OS intended for experienced, technical users, not for beginners. Experienced users often prefer a clean interface and are OK with the Dash being hidden.

Popped over from It's FOSS which is doing a first look at POP!_OS to get a peak at the visuals and ended up subscribing. The points you touched on makes sense to me. To me it looks like a general public safe distro keeping the potentially sharp implements (gparted) put away as in, not installed. I wonder what non-Linux savvy user comments would be like.

Don't quote me on this but I believe you can change the side dock to appear all the time some where in the settings or tweak tool. Also, do you really believe a 24 minute VM test can be qualified as a true review? I personally look at this more as a brief overview. Just my opinion.

The reason to have that dock hidden is because it takes too much screen space on smaller laptops computers. At least that's why I have Pop on my 14 in laptop and regular Ubuntu 17.10 on my desktop with a 32 in monitor.

I can see why it is hard to review. It is possible the actual purchased product such as their laptop is set up differently. Their customer/user may not have to do anything.

If I owned a Linux hardware company like System76, I too would use my very own spin. It makes sense to be in full control of your product.

nice review as always.. I happen to have a System76 galago pro i78550u, i had to choose from ubuntu 16 or Pop OS when I bought the machine but hey, first I only like xfce DE and also I cant afford to spend more than 400MB ram on the DE as I am a developer, plus I bought linux hardware to be able to destroy any linux distro that exist without having to worry about anything.. so why would I limit myself to ubuntu 16 or pop os?.. first thing I did when i got the machine was to format it and installed arch, tested about 100 distros so far.. was in love with manjaro xfce but there is always some gripes about manjaro that I dont know.. so now im running xubuntu 17.10 which its been rock solid and destroys every software i through at it.. for instance if I open android studio and run the emulator from there it will open instantly and thats some crazy shit..

You can change the dock properties to make it hide, show, or move it around so could be changed

I have watched quite a few reviews of this OS and it seems that everyone has something "they" think should be there. The premise behind Pop-OS is that you install it and you don't have to bother with UN-INSTALLING apps you won't ever need or use! I don't get why everyone is saying "it needs this" or "its missing the main idea!....to give you an OS that only comes with bare-bones then?...YOU get to pick and choose what you WANT installed and don't have to bother with removing stuff. Geez!...if you want an OS that comes with everything YOU want?....you won't ever find it...because no one can predict what apps you'll use!

On another note...I've been using this on my Dell XPS 15" for about 5 months now...and not for nothing?...but THIS is what Ubuntu SHOULD have been!...instead of having to find way to REMOVE things like Amazon....or ImageMagick?...you get just the browser, and an App Store that will give you everything you need! I love this OS and have no intentions of removing if from my Dell...and that's rare for me...since I'm a die-hard Fedora lover!....LoL!

It all (mostly) looks good but I still don't like anything that even remotely looks like UNITY.

Installed it, tried it and uninstalled it. Nothing I like about it. Voyager OS, Feren OS, MX Linux are the much better OS. POP OS desktop is ugly. So, Pop OS is not for me.
