Rory McIlroy wins Masters to seal career Grand Slam | BBC News

Rory McIlroy has completed a career Grand Slam in golf with his win at the US Masters tournament.

The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland has become only the sixth man and the first European to win the career Grand Slam of Masters, Open Championship, US Open and US PGA Championship titles.

Tiger Woods was among the first to congratulate McIlroy on winning the Masters, welcoming him to the exclusive club.

Woods, a 15-time major winner, had been the last player to win the Grand Slam in 2000, joining Americans Jack Nicklaus (1966) Ben Hogan (1953), Gene Sarazan (1935) and South Africa's Gary Player (1965).

What was really great to see was Rory finally defeating his own biggest enemies. His own inner demons. His own extremely troublesome and problematic mind and emotions. Along with the obvious relief that came from him actually doing so even though they tried in so many ways to ruin it for him. Well done Rory.

So happy for Rory! If anyone deserved to win the Masters, he did. That being said, I'm 77 years old and have watched the Masters, and the US Open, descend into tournaments that reward luck more than skill... Both organizations, the USGA and Masters, have used a philosophy of tricking up the greens and pin placements to the point where we watch more players fail than succeed. All in the name of protecting "par"... Today's players are tremendous athletes that SHOULD score well. It's much more fun to watch a player make birdie than 3 putt.
