As surveillance becomes more and more invasive we must develop more ways to keep safe and private. Currency is a big part of that. We are tracked and taxed with our credit cards and our cell phones and even government issued cash. We need to find other ways ways to truly transact privately. What I learned about promissory note: You send the bearer the note and if that original bearer holds that note, you are indebted to him/her, but the moment the note leaves the original bearer hands, the debt is discharged, even if the note gets back to the hands of the original bearer. My theory is, to send your local bank a promissory note via notary and put the money in an interest bearing account and collect the interest. After a year or more, ask for the original note for the money in the account (the interest is not part of it) if they can not provide the note, spend the money in the account.

This is a great idea, many thanks! It could be the way out of the looming "Great Depression2".

Someone suggested that the assets that back these promissory notes are unnecessarily tied up while the note is in circulation. Perhaps the note shouldn't specify one particular asset; rather, only say: "Backed by goods to the value of $X". That way, if someone really needs your backing asset (say, a chainsaw), but doesn't hold that particular note, then it's still OK to sell them your chainsaw, as long as you have some other asset of equivalent value to back the note with. This deliberate ambiguity gives the notes Fungibility.

Also, rather than putting all the issuer's contact details on the paper note itself, one could print a tough plastic note with the dollar value shown like a banknote, and use a QR code sticker for some web address where anyone could view the details. This sticker could then be peeled off by the issuer after the item is redeemed, if the details change, and the plastic note re-issued.

It's easy to tell which notes have been redeemed, these are the ones you received back in your posession, so a ledger is not really necessary. But if this scheme is taken up by any community, it may be worthwhile to establish an oversight agency which acts as trusted Referee. It can print the blank plastic notes for people to put their own QR stickers on, even vet the issuers to make sure they do have the promised assets, and maybe even handle the redemption process of the notes by contacting the issuer and requesting they hand over their backing asset for the note holder. That way, issuer's details can remain private, only the Referee can link a particular note to the issuer.
