The new publication American Glass: The Collections at Yale brings together objects from across the University to explore the vital role that glass has played in the nation’s art and culture. At the book’s core are the extraordinary holdings at the Gallery, which were assembled by Francis P. Garvan with the help of the pioneering scholar Rhea Mansfield Knittle. John Stuart Gordon, the Benjamin Attmore Hewitt Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts, draws upon highlights from the book and newly discovered stories from the archives to reveal how these two dynamic personalities outfoxed their rivals and reimagined the role of glass in museums and educational institutions.
Generously sponsored by the Martin A. Ryerson Lectureship Fund.
