About this session:
States across the US have long relied on GIS to inform decision-making for critical issues related to infrastructure, the environment, and the needs of their residents. However, creating, maintaining, and acquiring the data to fuel these geospatial analysis workflows remains a challenge, especially in a dynamically changing world.

Fortunately, innovation in both technology and how states approach GIS has paved the way for more accessible and reliable geospatial analytics. Not only has artificial intelligence (AI) made it easier and more efficient to produce high-quality mapping data, but state GIOs are increasingly developing centralized data acquisition, creation, and maintenance strategies to provide a unified source of truth for agencies and municipalities to leverage in their decision-making. What’s more, federal funding opportunities offer the financial resources to create and maintain statewide geospatial data repositories, supporting a wide range of applications in climate resilience, transportation planning, equity and inclusion, and more.

Former NSGIC president and Minnesota GIO Dan Ross and Ecopia AI’s Brandon Palin and Abigail Coholic discussed a variety of real-world case studies from state agencies across the US that are using high-precision mapping data to enhance climate resilience, transportation planning, and other critical infrastructure projects.

Specifically, they covered:

- Texas DOT’s use of 3D bridge data to support flood modeling over critical infrastructure & climate resilient planning;

- How the MPOs of Arizona’s Sun Corridor megaregion share geospatial data for active transportation planning, pedestrian RoW, & similar initiatives;

- Land cover analysis for hazard mitigation and stormwater management by the Texas Water Development Board;

- Federal funding opportunities for this data and how Ecopia can help you apply.
