What is the Jury Mast Knot For? The Jury Mast Knot is more useful than you think! This is a great knot to act as a sling for lifting heavy objects. Once the Jury Masthead Knot is tied, you end up with a form of sling that has four handholds.

Ashley's Book of Knots 1167 says the following; 1167. The Masthead Knot or Jury Mast Knot is often found within “fancy knots.” Mainly because it is decorative, also this knot is not often used for practical purposes. The original use for this knot was to form strap around a temporary masthead to which stays could be held tightly. The knot has good binging properties and offers several loops to which the stays are secured with Becket Hitches.

I personally think that the Jury Mast Knot is a useful one to know, as there are often times when a heavy awkward load does need shifting.

Hello! I learned a lot from you and I am very grateful for the many videos! ... but something is wrong here. the phases of the tieing do not give the knot that can be seen on the cover image . the order of the loops is different .

The top loop goes over the mast the rest is for pulleys for the rigging that would work the sail. Before fancy gear it was all knots and ropes only for the mast and rigging.

You can use this to make an improvised pulley system. Make the knot in two separate pieces of rope. Tie one to your load and the other to a secure point. Then run a line up and down through alternating loops of the jury mast knots. Secure the end at the top (a figure eight through the 'window' created by tying the top JM to its point works), and haul away, enjoying the mechanical advantage!
