Anyway, I think "4420" is actually the true modern day take on the formation for most teams. It's the same thing but I also mention it as the 4420 to make the following distinction. Meaning, the 2 strikers rarely apply pressure to the CBs. Instead looking to act as a shield for the midfield and therefore the pivots don't have to leave their positions in front of the back 4.


When 442s go wrong, it's usually the strikers aren't doing a good job blocking the lanes into the midfield as they get attracted to the CBs. This leads to one of the pivots stepping out to the opposing midfield and then spaces appear behind.
