EMDR Technique (The Movie Technique for Self-Compassion)

This video will walk you through an EMDR Technique, the Movie Technique, which helps to create distance from your memory and helps you develop self-compassion. EMDR therapy is designed to help you recover from anxiety and trauma, and provides help for flashbacks. This video points to two other EMDR techniques also designed to help you reverse a negative cognition about yourself that may have developed from a traumatic event. All these EMDR techniques help you develop compassion for yourself, which is a key component of healing. Barbara Heffernan is an EMDR Approved Consultant who has been helping people recover from anxiety and recover from trauma for over 15 years. A negative core belief is a negative statement about yourself that usually develops from trauma or neglect.

I have a lot of self compassion and I'm able to feel that I didn't deserve those situations, but still struggle with flashbacks and such

This is helpful. I had a breakup 2 years ago that I have alot of anger and pain around. Recently have started longing for this person after seeing them from a distance. Using this technique I saw how I was sabotaging myself into thinking I needed him because I was longing. He was not for me. I feel I can replace the longing with knowing it happened for my own good. Moving on!

I saw that little girl who was me decades ago, saw her confusion & cried for her. None of it was her fault.

I have had negative thoughts about myself for over sixty years your posts are already helping me although I have read enough books about the mind to reconcile that I was very young when my traumatic experience happened thank you And blessings and light be yours in life 🙏🙏🙏

I heard this called disassociating and for emotions that are extremely strong, I read about "Double Disassociation" which is where you imagine yourself as being in the projection box watching a 2nd you who is in the audience who is watching a 3rd you who on the screen in a movie of whatever the event is that you want to heal.

I had completely forgotten about this technique and recently I have been delving into some childhood memories that have been a bit over whelming so I'll start with the double Disassociation .

Awesome a perfect time for me to be reminded about this technique. Thanks

Thank you. This makes sense. I think it will help me. For some events in my life, I can imagine an audience gasping in horror as to what my mother did to me.

This is very helpful. I was exposed to toxic mold. The entire experience from exposure to divine intervention healing was 15 years. I did the movie screen technique like you suggested. My God. What I experienced...there are no words. I have more compassion for myself. Watching the first screen, I immediately felt it in my gut. Thank you.

That is so true, we don't seem to have as much compassion for ourselves as others. Jordan Peterson on youtube says you need to care for yourself deeply like you would for you own child, and have some real respect for yourself. It's odd actually earlier today I was thinking what a movie about my life would look like. I think very sad and hard to watch overall so viewers might say, yeah, he had some rough times.

Hi. I actually do this technique with real movies, watching the actress totally suffering what I went through.... And it totally works for me... Years long I do this. Honestly, as I have been victimized by predators and gaslighters so much... My head simply is not calm enough to see so clear... I just grab a movie and.... Bang! It works...

Wow! Your advice is pure gold! I love the idea of playing back a past negative event as a movie, in order to increase compassion for yourself.

Thanks so much for sharing this apeoach. We tend to be very hard with ourselves and, surely, we all deserve at least our own compassion.

Wow! Very enlightening...shifting the perspective onto someone else helps me to see the whole relationship with clarity and to give myself the empathy I deserve.❤️
