Will India, U.S. Step In to Help Dalai Lama Protect Tibet From China? | Taiwan Talks EP415
Показать описание
He’s the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, seen as a living reincarnation of Buddha who works for peace and enlightenment, and is an inspiration for millions of people around the world. But Beijing calls him a “dangerous separatist” who seeks to split Tibet from China. In 1959, the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India following China’s annexation of Tibet in 1951 and just prior to a mass slaughter and the burning of monasteries. Six decades later, on his 89th birthday in July, the Dalai Lama said he’s in good health after undergoing knee surgery in the U.S., rejecting rumors of poor health. China, meanwhile, says it is "natural" for Beijing to choose the Dalai Lama's successor, just as it appointed the 11th and current Panchen Lama, the second most influential figure in Tibetan Buddhism. The six-year-old boy whom the Dalai Lama recognized as the rightful reincarnation of the Panchen Lama disappeared along with his parents in 1995 and has never been seen in public since.
