season 4 episode 21 ''cult fiction''

shawn joins a cult

shawn, this is a hug, okay? this is a hug. and this is when you hug somebody, when you care about them, and then you want them to know that. now you can not leave here, do you hear? turner took care of you, he loves you, and you love him.

Shawn: (Turns to Turner) Jon, how could you be in here? How could you screw up on your bike? I have never seen you screw up on anything. I'm the screw-up, remember? Come on, you remember. Don't do this to me, Jon. I don't do alone real good. (Long pause) Look, I know you're in there, but it's like you're not really here. You're not talking, but I know you're here. So I'm just going to talk, and you can listen. (Sits bedside) Jon, even when I was at the Centre, it was all the things that you taught me that made me wonder if it was the right place for me or not. But you didn't teach me enough. You… and Cory… and my parents… and the Matthews and the handful of people who really care about me, so don't blow me off, John! Don't blow me off God! (Looks up) I've never asked you for anything and I never wanted to come to you like this. But don't take Turner away from me. He's not done yelling at me, yet. God, you're not talking, but I know you're here. So, I'm going to talk and you can listen. God… I don't want to be empty inside anymore. (Holds Turner’s hand. It slowly moves to embrace Shawn’s hand. Shawn smiles)

“This is a hug. Ok this is a hug”
Never forget that moment

"But don't take Turner away from me. He's not done yelling at me, yet." This - Shawn understood that he needed the people in his life, not to be all warm and kind, but to give him hell and help him to be the best person he could be.

“God, I don’t want to be empty inside anymore.” Damn, such a powerful line! And from a family show no less! Boy Meets World had some pretty great writing!

"But don't take Turner away from me. He's not done yelling at me, yet." the last time we see Turner in any more episodes

An amazingly powerful scene. Shawn was the best character in the show.

Rider Strong had some very powerful and complex scenes on this series. Hospital rooms. With Shawn and Jack arguing over who was a real son to the dying Chet. The writing is extraordinary. Shawn passionately recalls all the awful things he went through with his dad, trying to maintain a father-son relationship. He lists in detail the awful experiences and thinks that will put Jack in his place. And then Jack replies, "I know. I never got to do any of those things." "Got to do": amazing. I mean, how do the writers manage to understand the suffering of both boys who are so different?

In this scene, "This is a hug!" "Don't do this to me, John. I don't do alone real good." (Always makes me cry. No kid should feel alone.) "I don't want to be empty inside any more." All the façade ripped away. Then there are the consecutive conflicting lines that show how confused Shawn is. And then all of Rider Strong's shifting facial expressions adding to that.

How did the writing, at least, never win an Emmy for this show? I guess because it was marketed as a kids' show. But it's also about parenting, about teaching, about becoming an adult. And the writers seemed to understand every character that they wrote for and make it convincing. Maybe the powers that be couldn't decide if it was a comedy or drama.

Shawn was the realist character on the show. Most relatable. Through him so many real life issues that kids go through were worked through on screen. Shows these days don’t have real life lessons, they don’t show these types of hardships

taking Mr. Turner off the show was one of the WORSE decisions this show made creatively. God I missed him in the second half of the series.

I love the mirroring between this scene and the first scene of the episode: at the beginning of the episode, Turner tells Shawn that he has a handful of people who care about him and says, “So don’t blow me off.” At the end of the episode, Shawn is the one saying he has a handful of people who care about him and says to Turner, “So don’t blow me off.” It gets turned around.

A lot of really good writing came out of the 90’s-early 2000’s

I loved this show: It did not mess around with plots. It stuck with the reality of many situations and based their plots on that. Boy Meets World was a very profound show. It is one of the shows I have seen that based a whole season on the fate and status of one character, and how the others react to it.

Man Shawn went through the darkest of experiences of any character

This is exactly the reason this show was so important to us growing up. Kids nowadays need these type of life lessons (compassion, prayer, loyalty). God knows they do 😓 So glad we did 🥹

Shawn’s monologue was the most powerful poetry.

When Cory straight up ordered Shawn to remain in the room with Mr. Turner... this scene hit me so hard as a kid, even moreso now.

Man, this was such a powerful scene. Sitcoms back then had very powerful and serious moments!

The only thing that would’ve made the scene better is if there were no music. Just utter silence as Shawn breaks down.
