Nice ride along us highway 41 through Evansville

Great to see us 41 in Evansville Indiana. I used to live in West Lafayette Indiana back in the early 90s. Back then Evansville was very small with not too much going on. Now I would love to see what has changed since then in Evansville

Great job of showing the precise boundary changes. It surprises a lot of people that north of the Ohio River is still Kentucky for a mile or so. The river changed course sometime in the early 1800s just after the boundary was set as the river. The boundary stayed where it had been even if the river didn’t.
That is why Ellis Park race course is in what would seem to be Evansville, even though parimutuel better was not legal in Indiana for many decades of its existence.

In the age of Interstates, people forget about the nearly century-old Federal system. US 41 is one of it's most important (and longest north-south) routes; going from US 1 in Miami all the way to the tip of Michigan at Lake Superior. And it's a narrow two-lane all the way up to a 10-lane freeway along the way. Even has it's own interstate tandem in Wisconsin.

Both Kentucky and Indiana agreed it would be impossible to convert this part of US 41 to I-69. Too narrow and the bridges are nearing the end of their lifespans. The new highway is under construction to the east now; 41 will remain 41 and head north toward Terre Haute. Mainline I-69 will shift to the new road and the part that goes into Evansville proper will get a spur route designation (it was originally I-164).
