I love street food and I see it as the gateway to understanding a country’s cultural and culinary identity. As a backpacker, there’s also no better way to get well fed on the cheap than dining on street food! However, whenever I arrive in a new country I have a problem – I don’t know where to find the most authentic street food that’s also safe (food poisoning sucks!). Doesn’t matter how much research I do beforehand, the fact is that nothing beats a local’s knowledge and experience when it comes to street food. I have teamed up with Marc from Sa Ba Street Food Tours in Yangon, who has kindly agreed to take me on his most popular evening street food tour around downtown Yangon and show me (and you) the best street food Myanmar has to offer in this 3 part series!

In Part 2, we cross over into Little India and try out some street food with Indian influence while learning about the tea culture in Myanmar at teahouse popular with locals. Tea is a very important part of life here in Myanmar, and this is one of the only countries in the world that both drinks and eats tea! Something you definitely can’t miss is lahpet thoke, or fermented tea leaf salad, which is up there with mohinga as the most iconic dish of Myanmar.

Be sure to check out Part 1 and 3 of this Yangon Street Food Tour!
Part 3:

If these videos have got you hungry and curious about Myanmar, make sure to visit and give Marc a call, WhatsApp message or email to book this awesome food adventure!

For full disclosure, I only covered the cost of the food and drinks for both of us, which essentially constitutes a discount given the price of the regular tour and the fact that it was basically a private tour rather than the usual group tour. However this has in no way influenced my opinion at all – the tour is totally worth it at full price!

In my view Yangon food is not for everyone. I don't think they have a dish that is internationally known world wide. The guest first impression already said, it doesn't look appetizing.
