After two and a half years in New Zealand, we finally made it to Mount Maunganui! Even though we were there for only a couple of hours, we're already dreaming of a weekend away at the mount!

Can't believe you guys didn't go to the top of the Mount! You will have to next time, its worth the stairs. NZ is full of epic white sand beaches, plenty more where that came from although just not built up like Mt Maunganui. You have to go check out the Coromandel this summer... Waihi and Pokohino, Whangamata, Hot Water Beach, Hahei and Cathedral Cove, New Chums beach, to name a few. Many in Northland too which you may have already visited. That list should keep ya going!

Just practically next door to where you eaten your burger is Dixie Brown restaurant and owned and run by South Africa Ian's. We're very fortunate to live here for nearly 20 years and we're grateful every day.

This drive on Marine Parade reminds me of Durban with all the apartments etc. We have walked around The Mount Twice and gone up once ❤ And yes, you need to visit Dixie Browns 👍

Hi guys
Wonderful to be spontaneous.
It’s a long enough journey for a day trip. Even though the road surfaces and the roads in general are in excellent condition, I found driving in New Zealand somewhat frustrating without highways like I knew them in South Africa of old.

The tide looked low but even then it is nice to hear the waves. I think the mount is a lot more akin to the kind of sandy white beaches and waves that you’d be used to in KZN. Margate, eat your heart out…

Lastly, beware that intense New Zealand summer sun. But have loads of fun. Doctors orders!!!

Since it shall soon be Christmas, I’ll wish you “Happy happy”

You can go up from the pilot bay side side which is less steep going up then you can take the stairs down
Personally I like the base track more.

One of our favorite beaches in Nz. The Caravan park on the beach is excellent. They have permanent caravans set up that you can hire. Use the lime scooters to get around town too. Love your videos guys.

Welcome to my hometown ( family ). Where a hike up the Mount & the beach are the go to places. A suggestion should you decide to conquer the mount next time. Early morning, otherwise try the base track anytime of day. Definitely waterviews, but you may encounter mums jogging with occupied strollers.😊

You would have past it on the way down SH2, the town of Waihi, just past the town is a turn off to waihi beach, smaller little shopping and cafe areas with the wonderful beach, goes for miles and is a favourite.

If you're going to stay at the Holiday Park there, you'll need to book well ahead, especially for a long weekend. Sometimes it's booked more than a year in advance. The hot pools there are fed by a natural underground thermal spring. It's great just soaking in them with the mountain right beside you.
The track that goes around the mountain is pretty flat - about a 40 minute quiet walk.
Oh yeah! - Those sheep; if you talk with an Aussie accent they run away from you and hide. Ask any Kiwi why that is.

I'm not a fan of the north island I never felt at home anywhere and never found the people friendly maybe that's my family's experience because we lived in Auckland for 7 years but we love the south Island it gives us European vibes less rain colder certain parts remind us of South Africa. We live now in rural Oxford on a farm in north Canterbury and I must admit Christchurch is hands down the best city in NZ love it here people are so friendly and welcoming. We are 1 of 3 South African families in the small village of Oxford population 2000 but many in Christchurch and there is no traffic will never go back to Auckland.
