Al Ahli concede penalty in bizarre circumstances during AFC Champions League match

Conceding a penalty to the opposition in professional football is usually foolish - and often embarrassing - at the best of times...

Salmin Khamis will certainly think so after this howler in Al Ahli's AFC Champions League semifinal first leg match against Al-Hilal on Tuesday.

Khamis, thinking the ball had fully crossed the edge of the pitch after an attack- promptly picked it up.

The assistant referee quickly noted the infraction and awarded Al-Hilal a penalty.

However, Al-Hilal's (3) Carlos Eduardo slammed his penalty off the post as Al-Ahli escaped Khamis's unusual error.

Pretty extreme. You need not only to know the rules of football, but also geometry in this case. But from the looks at 0:29, I am confident that the ball is in. Referee courageously made a perfect decision in split second. Hat's off.

Why is it bizarre? The ball wasn't completely out and then the player picks up the ball. That's hand ball, the referee didn't have any choice.
