In this video I explore street photography without people. I show how we can make images which focus on the little things which people leave behind in the wake of their lives, and the stories they can tell if captured well.

The best thing ive done in my 40plus years of photography is taking images for me and not for the pleasure of other's liking what I post on social media, something that will be relevant to me in decades

I’ve been a press accredited photojournalist in all the conflict zones around the world for the last 30+yrs now retired… this content is the best advice I have ever heard. Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I have been a street photographer for several years. While many of my photos feature people, a significant number capture the overlooked details, such as an old public pay phone, missing most of its parts and covered in colorful graffiti. One of the aspects I love about being a photographer is training oneself to observe everything around. Those who stare at their smartphones have no idea what they are missing. Enjoy your content, Sean -- keep up the great work! 🙂

My rule, if I’m on the street and don’t forget about alleys, and I see it, and think it is worth the shutter count, I say you can call it “street photography “.
Sean, this is a easy listening and inspiring video.

I too like the “empty space” street photography. People can distract the viewer from a potentially great image. Thanks for sharing Sean!

Great episode! Love this style of street photography. Can't express enough how excited I am to hear more about the project you are working on with Josh, too.

I once posted an image of non-traditional street photography to the street photography subreddit and got absolutely blasted by people saying "it wasn't real street photography."

I complained about this and received a response from Scott Strazzante, a Pulitzer prize winning photojournalist and street shooter saying "the best way to know if you're a street photographer is by having people tell you you're not doing 'real street photography.'"

Yes, yes, yes...this is more my style of street, thanks so much for highlighting this aspect. When I go out I often feel I "really ought to" get people in my images but by far and away my best shots don't contain people.

Great video. I love this style of street photography. That payphone shot is so powerful. I’m excited to get out again and focus on the details. Thanks for the reminder!

Dear Sean, thank you for this wonderful episode! Street photography has so many facets and for someone like me, who is rather shy to (maybe) press people with a camera, this is a very coherent way of photography. But: you have to take the time to immerse yourself in these many little stories that present themselves in order to SEE ... and that is a challenge in this incredibly fast and hectic time of distractions. Thank you for your work - it's always soul food for me 😌

I think the best thing about street photography without people (I thought of calling it soulless photography, but that wouldn’t be right at all!) is that it slows you right down. You don’t have to be so reactive, it’s much less energetic, more contemplative. I find this clarity of thinking, so it ends up being as much meditation as it is photography. Thanks for the episode, very inspiring, as ever.

For me street photography is so much more than having to have people in it. Thanks for your awesome videos ❤❤❤

I have only recently started attempting street photography (use my phone mostly, country is too dangerous to carry a camera around) and I struggle to take pictures of people, so I tend to aim for this kind of street photography. Thanks for the added inspiration.

Great concepts. The fewer accepted constraints, the more the photographer becomes the artist. Thanks for widening my horizons.

I totally agree that People are not always needed to speak of street photography. 😊 Thanks for sharing! Grote from Belgium

I can relate to you, Sean. Although I'm just a photography enthusiast, I had two photography exhibitions done exactly according to your advice, I photographed abandoned family homes, hotels, factories, hospitals, abandoned military areas without moving anything at all! I left everything as I found it and not a single person is in the photo, so the exhibition was appropriately named "Human absence", although the human presence was definitely felt...

Just discovered your channel Sean and this video is so perfect. This is kinda where I've wanted to go with street photography to add in street photography without people 😀👌 fantastic video
