Those were the words of Denmark's prime minister after her country voted by a two-thirds majority to end the Danish opt-out from EU defence and security policy. As Vladimir Putin continues his bloody war against Ukraine, Denmark is not alone in the European Union in making historic moves regarding European defence capacities. The Danish political elite's use of the war in Ukraine as the moment to ask the people about their Defence opt out from the EU (recalling Denmark is one of the most Euro-Sceptic countries in the EU) was the height of cynical political manipulation. And from the very people who called the Brexit referendum undemocratic because it asked a simple "in" or "out" question at a time of relative political and economic stability when emotions were no 'high'.

"When there is war on the continent you cannot be neutral." Why not? Many countries in Europe have managed to remain neutral thru many wars. Ireland stayed neutral in WWII. It might have been endangered by German aggression but that didn't justify supporting the British monarchy, not exactly a force for good in its own right. Civilized countries don't get involved in other countries' wars. To a certain extent that is the very definition of what it means to be civilized.
