What's the big deal about net neutrality? Grab a beer with CNET's Bridget Carey as she serves up an easy explanation.

The video is great, the beer analogy is easy to understand, but it's missing a absolutely CRUCIAL element.

Using the same beer analogy:

The service provider is the bartender, you're still the customer, but the difference is in the size of the glass.

With net neutrality, the speed you get a pint of beer vs a pitcher of beer has to be the same - for the same price.

You pay the same price for pitchers(these would be the equivalent of video, torrents, and other large files) as you would for a pint of beer (a single web page).

It also means that the bartender could be crowded with people ordering pitchers instead of pint's.

I'm interested to see how this plays out. Net neutrality is a very new ideaology, so it will be interesting to see the post net neutrality internet.

I remember seeing Bridget in 7th grade and falling in love. Sophomore year college and this lady is still hot as hell.

You kinda missed the hole in your analogy. If a bartender is blocking/throttling the flow of my favorite beer, I can throw a rock and hit another bar that will serve me whatever I want. ISPs hold virtual monopolies in a lot of regions of the US. Your analogy only works if it's in a town with one bar and nobody else sells beer. THAT is the part that is scaring people; effective regional restrictions on content access in the US. The Internet should be freely accessible from anywhere in the world. Those who are paid to open the gates should have no say in what I want to access. It's not their place to regulate me.

I'm not too worried about it, because when push comes to shove, there will most likely be one ISP that will see the demand for an open internet provider, and they will have internet access similar to how we have it when Net Neutrality was in full force. They'll lower prices too to gain the market share, and eventually the other ISPs will have to compete with them. Just like how "unlimited data" plans are now the norm for cell phone service.
