Essentially Ellington 2015 Competition
Pacific Crest Jazz Orchestra- American Music Program
Saturday, May 9, 2015

Duke Ellington’s music is at the very heart of America’s 20th-century musical heritage and the core of the rich canon of jazz music. Jazz at Lincoln Center, committed to instilling a broader understanding of this music, created the Essentially Ellington program (EE) during the 1995–96 school year to make Ellington’s music accessible to as many high school musicians as possible and to support the development of their schools’ music programs.

Most well deserved standing ovation in competition history.

Thirty years ago I saw a Marsalis band perform this marvelous work from 1948, with the original soloist Jimmy Hamilton featured. And now I can see this superb performance by these young people, by memory yet! Like so many Ellington masterworks, Duke dropped it out of his repertoire, in this case in 1954.

I am absolutely astonished by this bands performance! and that is a major understatement. They locked into the groove so well and really felt the emotion behind the music. 10/10 wish I could have gone to see this live!!

This orchestra stole the show last year. They won and they deserved it. Probably the greatest performance I heard during the Essentially Ellington competitions. After watching to the first part today, not sure they'll be surpassed this year. San Diego School of Performing Arts and Tucson Jazz Institute were great, but ...

Fantastic. This young orchestra has really gotten to very essence of Edward Kennedy Ellington. Bravo to each and every one of you. This warms my heart.

No sheet music? Interesting. i would think the director makes them memorize it so it swings harder

The fact that the bone section is mostly female is awesome! I rarely see that in my experience.
