OVERHEAD SQUATS - The Most Difficult Squat To Master (So DO THEM)

Overhead Squats are the most difficult squat to master, which is why you should do them. I have been doing overhead squats for over 10 years and while they get away from me from time to time for a few months, they always find their way back into my routine. Whenever I feel my core strength, flexibility, or overall strength is falling a bit, I will start doing overhead squats again. They are a complete all in one exercise and it doesn't matter big your back squat is, the overhead squat will humble you. Like SSB squats, front squats, and thrusters that will quickly find any weaknesses in your armor, at least you can have some form breakdown, some cheating, help from other areas, none of that is true for the overhead squat, There is no room for error in the overhead squat, but again, that is precisely why you should do them. They will make you bulletproof and strong like no other lift can so if you could choose ONE exercise to do for the rest of your life do the OVERHEAD SQUAT.

Today I did the following 45lb bar x 10, 65lb x 10, 95lbs x 10, and 135x2x10. I wanted to do a 3rd set at 135 but my body so no way. I have some work to do.

Great video Alan, I find these and front squats rather challenging when trying to keep balance! Probably something I should implement into my training more often

I believe you 100% but I'm not even sure how to get started. If you put something out in the future about getting started with this movement I'd definitely check it out. Dan John also praised the goblet squat too. The goblet squat is often talked about as a "beginner" squat or a squat for "high reps", but it can blow your legs up and really reinforces the opening up of the hips when you squat.

Good stuff. I should start doing these again. Shoulders are pretty tight but I’m sure they’ll adapt.

its a neat movement..but with my jacked up shoulders and chronic back issues..it would be a no go for me..but its a powerful neat respectable movement for sure. good job!

I definitely CANNOT do a pistal squat! I think anything that is one legged is challenging or 1 arm like 1 arm pushups. I agree when I do prisoner squats (Bodyweight squat with your hands on your head) it’s definitely more challenging and you can’t cheat at all

I agree that you should treat your body as one machine… same concept as “the knee bone is connected to the thigh bone 🎶 song”…. I need to start doing this with a 🧹 along with continuing to work on my calf mobility. Am I able to modify my foot position for now to do this? Also any tips for how to avoid neck tightness when holding weights overhead?
