Captain Arthur Rostron said for all steam pressure from the boilers to be directed into the engines. That meant all heating turned off, all power in unnecessary places turned off, anywhere that was not needed to go full speed, and that would use steam was turned off. Carpathia's normal top speed was about 14 and a half knots, but Arthur was able to get his ship to over 18 knots. He actually damaged the engines by doing this, but still heroic.

The closest ship to the RMS Titanic was the SS Californian. The RMS Carpathia was the furthest. Heroic effort by Captain Rostron and his crew for rushing to Titanic’s aid.

the crew pushed the mechanical limits of the RMS Carpathia to get to the scene as quickly as possible, dodging the ice bergs. the ship was never the same. legends and heroes, god bless the crew.

CQD was actually newer than SOS
Also Californian was technically closer, but they had no idea as to what was going on.
Also, sadly, Carpathia sank in WW1 on 17th July, 1918, 105 years ago today. It was serving as a troop ship, and was sunk by German U-boat U-55, leading to the loss of 5 people

FunFact: The Titanic's Sister ship the Olympic Got The Distress signal and Hurried To Get There as quick as it could Whilst doing so she recorded her fastest speed on coal burning boilers

Actually there was a ship closer than Carpathia, the Californian. After an earlier fallout between the wireless operator from the Titanic and Californian, the wireless operator from the Californian went to bed. Crew on the Californian saw the Titanic on the horizon and firing rockets, but for some reason they didn’t think anything was wrong. Californian was only 10 miles away compared to Carphatia’s 50 and would have been able to reach their position within an hour. In that case maybe over 1500-2000 of the 2200 pasengers could have been saved. It wasn’t to be sadly.

SS CALIFORNIA is actually the nearest but didn't got the message due to them turning off the radio and only going there on the morning after hearing the message on the morning

I know I’ve read somewhere that CQD was short for Come Quickly Danger. I’ve also read that SOS alledgedly stands for Save Our Souls, but that sounds way less likely.

The carpathia was actually not the closest ship, it was a different ship the SS California who was closest. The reason why this ship did not come was the communicator was asleep at the time it was sinking. The titanic also used fireworks as another distress call but the ship thought the Titanic was holding a party.

Actually, the closest ship nearby was the SS Californian, it was just 6 miles away, but the Titanics radio operator told them to shut up, so after the Carpathia was contacted, they came.

Ships That Responded: Carpathia, Californian And Olympic
The Olympic Was Going Back To Southhampton From New York And Got The SOS Signal But They Were 100 Miles Away. The Olympic Was On Full Ahead. Then... The Carpathia Said To The Olympic.. "The Titanic Has Sunk"

The Californian was closer to Titanic. Only about 10 miles away. But they never received the distress call because her wireless operator went to sleep not long before Titanic struck the iceberg.
