We were at a campground that trusted neighbors had a frightening experience they ROLLED their small tent, sleeping bags and threw it in car and immediately left. Years later we're standing at that campground next to a pond and heard NOTHING! No frogs, crickets nothing until we heard a thud not far off. We left.

I have felt the thud while hiking. It came from around a bend in the trail, but it was so close it vibrated into my feet and up my body. I turned around went back the way I came.
It wasn't a rock or tree, no snapping, cracking or bouncing sounds, just the sound of something solid hitting the ground that had to weigh hundreds of pounds.
I heard it again a couple of years later, but at a greater distance while hiking at another place. I had a sighting that time.
Both events were in Tennessee.
