In this video, I look at the history of the Vandals from about 400 until the conquest of Vandal Africa in 533 CE. I focus on Vandal migrations, their impact on the politics of their era, and the nature of their relationship with the local Roman population in Africa.

Late Antiquity fascinates me more than most other time periods. Good little lecture on a seldom brought up topic, the Vandal Kingdom.

Most people nowadays don't realise that the Vandals were an actual ethnic group and not just a generic word for someone who likes to destroy things for the fun of it.

Wenedzi (Veneti) after Wandale (Vandals) - ancient Arian (Slavic peoples) living in Central and Eastern Europe. The etymology of the word Wandal comes from name of river Węda, Wenda /venda/ (today Wisła, Vistula). Wenda pronounced in the old Polish language with a nasal: wanda - ("water, fishing"), Baltic slavic: vandene ("water nymph") or vanduo ("water, wave"), Germanic: Wenedka (Lusatian, Slavic woman).
Wanda is also an ancient Polish female name that is still being used today

Hello! I am an Undergraduate in History at the University of Arizona. Next Semester I will be working on my capstone, which is a documentary about the Pagans who resisted Christianization in Late Antiquity- The Middle Ages. I wondered if you minded helping me with my project in any way. I personally love your videos, very informative and entertaining.

Vandals, along with the Suebi are the least understood of the Germanic tribes that conquered Iberia. Awesome.

To a Christian, even an Arian, Rome was a holy city. The tendency for Catholics to describe Vandals and Goths as 'sacking' Rome is very disingenuous. They would have seen their entry as part pilgrimage, part rescue of the holy city.
Much as to Arians, the birthplace of Arius in North Africa would be viewed as sacred.
The Catholic Church has spent a thousand years trashing what they see as heretical.

In their Arianism and policy of keeping separate from the Romans The Vandals were typical of the first generation of barbarian kingdoms

There were agreements between the Berbers and the monotheistic Arian tribes against the polytheistic Roman Empire that killed its opponents of the creed.

Others have said that the Vandals perceived a betrayal from Rome. Which led to the sacking of Rome.

I think that some of the blue Visigoth's lines of migration are missing! (1:22) The lines should also go up to areas in and around Sweden and Gotland. (Also perhaps Jylland in Denmark. close to the sound: Gotland?) Just a thought from Denmark :-)

I am a amateur researcher, thorougly interested in the Great migration age. And Rome was sacked by both Visigoths and Vandals. The vandals/vandalos who came from Väner lake area? Earliest name Vænir(1000c) and *Vændir(5-800c?). Some 2000 years ago probably *Vendiz. So VendilaR, "Vandal" probably means "small tribe from Vänern". *Vendiz, should mean "turner", "tide- and floodlake". Still the verb wenden and noun wende is used in german meaning "turn:" and "turning point". The vandals can have originated around Väner lake in west Sweden. Twothousand years ago the name might have been *Vendiz, meaning "the Turner, the tide- and floodlake." The lake is known for an unusual flood in spring. So a vandal's original name VendilaR could mean "small tribe from Väner lake(area)". The migration started most certainly because of drastic climate change around 550 BC, when weather turned from tempered mediterranean climate to a harsh nordic climate in one generation.

The main reason is that it was Roman territory, so they took it back.
