The scene in which Clive is closing the windows and then remembers his Cambridge days with Maurice just broke my heart

the irony is that this was played for a scene that was more about maurice and clive and a moment that would never be theirs again

Really though I think it's called "Clive and Ann" because you can see her realizing something's happened and is tugging at Clive's heart in that scene too. The piece is really about the walls of their, I won't say fake but rather embellished, happy marriage are starting to crack as Clive realizes his feelings never really ended for Maurice and and Ann realizes she might never have completely had his heart. It's the tragedy of them realizing their marriage might not be the "happily ever after" they thought/hoped it would be.

Closing the window to his youth, regretting his present day I suppose. God bless Richard Robbins.

Ending a film with closing windows and looking out windows while remembering. An ingenious stroke. And this music is perfect for it. Such a masterpiece of cinema. A true classic now.

It truly is heartbreaking when someone lets go of what they really love for just a mirage of what a life together would look like. That final scene made my heart feel heavy and empty at the same time.

I have never seen a movie end so beautifully yet so heartbreaking. I can’t even imagine how painful it must be to know you could have had someone but you lost it all in the end. I hate that this is a realistic ending.

The moment Clive closed his heart like all those windows...Now he lost Maurice's heart as well..Well yes to feel "normal" he wanted this maybe but this still can't change the fact he was heartbroken. He wanted to feel same thing with ann but he knows it is not possible...

What a heartbreaking ending. I don’t think Clive was a coward despite what others think. He sacrificed his own true happiness to keep himself, Maurice and his family safe. Whilst Maurice decided that his happiness was worth the risk.

It perfectly showcases two ways you could’ve ended up back then. (even what could’ve happened to you if you were found out, the trial scene.)

Risk being happy, or live the rest of your life in a miserable lie to keep yourself safe. People who say Clive is a coward, this was the 1910’s and homosexuality was illegal goddamnit. I think it’s fair to be scared, hell some people even died because of their sexuality. People still do.

I feel sad for both Clive and Anne. Imagine how many people ended up like that. It’s like you’re in a room surrounded by dozens of people, screaming at the top of your lungs, but nobody can hear you. You drown in your own misery. Whilst your other part is unaware that they don’t love you back romantically and never will.

That and on top of the real you is a heavy secret to carry and heartbreaking as well.

Did you notice that the piano keys are almost beaten in this piece? I think it's because of Clive's hopelessness. It's like if the pianola of the beginning of the film was playing in his head but with such despair, because he lost Maurice forever. It's like a hearing representation of his memories becoming painful.

"...Maurice had disappeared thereabouts...
He waited for a little in the alley, then returned to the house, to devise some method of concealing the truth from Anne."
Brilliant and brave novel. Beautiful film adaptation. Stunning score.
Always get me emotional.

There is a reason I think that the composer, Richard Robbins, named the piece "Clive and Anne." It's not just Clive who suffered.. (btw, Hugh Grant looks like Arthur Rimbaud in his early days on this album cover. Glad he played Clive).

Gosh, where to start critiquing such a sumptuous movie? There's just so much quality! Robbins' score is, in many ways, simple. This movement, for example, is basically two chords. However, his treatment of them and the complex undercurrent – both musical and emotional – are rapturous. The whole production is first class, evocative, moving, and arguably unlike any other film. Ivory is still alive, but Merchant and Robbins have departed this world. I pray they're having a drink with Forster and that he is proud of their lavish adaptation of his touching story.
