The fib MC2020 is taking sustainability as a fundamental requirement, based upon a holistic treatment of societal needs and impacts, life-cycle cost and environmental impacts, with these being aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals defined in 2015. TG10.1 aims to produce the first general structural code for new and existing concrete structures which fully integrates the provisions for the design of new concrete structures and matters relating to existing concrete structures, including situations where new structural members are incorporated as parts of existing structures. The TG10.1 project for advancing the fib Model Code for Concrete Structures is operating under the working title of “fib Model Code 2020”.

The organisation framework for preparation of the MC2020 aims to enable all fib Commissions and various other bodies which are working on relevant topics to be adequately linked with the TG10.1. This is being done by engaging all COM chairs (or other appointed representatives of the COM) as TG10.1 members.

It is recognised that an important objective for TG10.1 is to present detailed background technical information in the form of supporting fib Bulletins, preferably with these publications being developed and made available during the development of the MC 2020. It is envisaged that this will be organised via relevant fib Commissions and TG’s. Delivery of background documents will enable dissemination of the up-to-date information on the fib MC2020 concepts and provide for timely feedback in the final stage of harmonisation of the MC2020. These publications started in 2017. It is understood that various Task Groups and MC2020 Action Groups are working on the development of supporting fib Bulletins.
