I'm creating something now without interviews too. The great thing about the internet and YouTube is that you can create whatever you want, and while a few people who have done it the same old way for a long time might complain, who cares? They aren't the audience. The audience are the people who care about the subject in your film. No longer are there constraints with how you "must" create documentaries. You can do whatever you want. The "succeeding" part is about how you connect with the viewers, not how you measured up to other people who like doing things a different way.
