Be heard on the road - Hornit dB140 Bike Horn Review feat. 140dB + Remote Trigger + Garmin Mount

As a cyclist you often have to “yell” at cars, pedestrians, or even other cyclists to make your presence known. Whether you’re cursing at a car that cut you off or just letting pedestrians know you are passing them, a bike horn is a great way to improve your safety. The Hornit db140 is claimed to be the world’s loudest electric bike horn with a ear-piercing 140dB that ensures people hear you coming. The latest version of the Hornit dB140 now features a universal Garmin style quarter turn mount that makes it easy to attach to bikes or third party out-front mounts. The high decibel output still carries an affordable $34.95 price and uses two AA batteries that are claimed to last upto 12 months with normal use (i.e. six 1 second blasts per day). There are two tones with the horn, a piercing 140dB mode and a more friendly 121dB lower pitch option. Hornit also includes a wired remote that allows you to brake and honk at the same time.

One of the key features of the updated Hornit dB140 horn is the integration of a Garmin quarter turn style mount that has quickly become a universal mount style for bicycle accessories. That means the dB140 can now be mounted on a variety of third-party out-front mounts on the market such as the Topeak UTF. Hornit even includes two mount options that accommodate 22-26mm handlebars or 31.8mm handlebars which are more common on road cycling drop bars. Both mounts use plastic c-shaped clamps with two allen bolts to securely hold it on the handlebars on or off the road. One nice feature of the included mounts is that they feature a storage slot for the trigger to prevent it from accidentally being pressed while being stored or transported.

Visually, the Hornit dB140 has a distinctive streamlined shape that looks more like a bike light than a horn. The dB140 has a torpedo-like shape with an ellipse cross profile that flattens out in the rear. To help direct the sound forward, the exterior of the horn extends slightly ahead of the horn speaker. Most of the exterior is plastic with a flat black finish and sharp creases along the edges and down the center. There is also a thin rubber bumper that extends around the rear of the horn that provides some protection against falls or rubbing against anything. Branding is limited to Hornit printed on the rear in orange which gives it an understated look.

Nice - but not nice enough for me to abandon my bike mounted grenade launcher for clearing traffic. Great review though.

Great bike accessory. I've had the earlier version for quite a few years, I believe the mount is the only difference. The battery lasts a very long time. It indeed gets noticed.

Excellent review! Incredible bike horn!! 🐝

Pro tip: the 140db bird chirp mode makes people immediately look up to the sky for birds. 🦅 DO NOT USE

Awesome it uses AAA batteries. Last a year. Pain recharging USB

I REALLY appreciate that it uses batteries and DOES NOT have a built in battery which means I don't have to throw this away when the battery goes bad.

Great review! Using rechargeable AAA is a plus for me. Half the world thinks it's too loud, another half not strong enough - so it must have the perfect loudness. Build quality seems above average concerning aftermarket bicycle horns, most are cheap breakable plastic and anemic. Thanks!

I wonder when bike horns will be getting fire alarm PA speaker level loudness

FYI, they sell a longer 5ft remote cable on their website.

I have one of these they are no where near 140db i doubt they are anywhere near 120db but they are okay, the first time i used the 140 setting it was a shared path blocked by a load of old pensioners but when i sounded the horn they all started looking up at the trees and house roofs, they thought it was some type of bird, the 120 horn sound even on trails no where near roads some people seem to ignore it so i give them a blast with the airzound XL, the 120 and 140 mode of the hornet sound about the same when it comes to loudness so i just use what i call the horn mode, i love the loudness of the airzound XL it is way louder than the hornet but the downside you have to blow the bottle up now and then, not much of a downside and no gas cans or batteries make it cheap to run and when people ignore the hornet this airzound XL makes them jump they cannot ignore that.

i have this one on my Montague Folding MTB and I live in Flushing, NY...believe me when I tell you this that this Hornit Horn is loud and stops the biggest to the smallest vehicle and pedestrian on the street.

People usually don’t know what the sound is, and where’s the sound comes from. I found out the hard way. The best warning i found out works the best. Is the sound of the back tire skid.
And they move right away. And they hear it as far as 15 meters. Lol

Nice bike horn girl that comes in handy especially since I'm using my eBay or a little thing for transportation right now cuz I can't afford a car with high prices in high inflation

And I liked that the batteries are removable because if anything goes wrong with the battery you can replace them you can always use rechargeable batteries I have rechargeable batteries

This sucks, why can’t there just be one that makes a regular car horn sound?

I feel like a GoPro mount would’ve made more sense than a Garmin one. GoPro mounts offer a lot more mounting options. In fact many Garmin mounts have a GoPro option underneath, so you could potentially mount your Garmin on top and the horn on the bottom.

Can you use it without the remote control?

yeah the AAA batteries had me as well since i love rechargeable lights for my bike. also that garmin mount is nice and its nice to have 2 but u could of done with one being big and slot a piece of rubber into the clip and it makes diameter smaller. save on plastic and cheaper product overall. like when would i need 2 garmin mounts? if ive got hornet horn and garmin computer i still have a spare for nothing! also it looks a big big and no sound volume. and not to mention no light so my handle bars will have all kinds on it.

Harmonicas are compact instruments. People really go with it.

if hornit would do a 900kg bronze bell sound and a fog horn that would have been useful but no they had go with useless “sounds like a bird” sounds instead.

140dB it's like jet engine from few meters, or gun shut. You get contusion if you hear sound the loud from 2-3m. I strongly doubt this claim

this might just be to weird of a sound ... if the driver is actually startled by it i gain nothing. airzound it is
