Quartal Harmony in My Neighbor Totoro & Spirited Away

In this video, I look at several ways that composer Joe Hisaishi uses quartal harmony and the interval of a fourth to help define his musical language. I use a few examples from the music to My Neighbor Totoro, and to Spirited Away.

The "Path of The Wind" woodwind parts sounded very chinese to me. It's a very cool sound. But when looking at stuff like this I always wonder how it fits into a harmonic scheme. There's a lot of stuff going on but it looks like... a sus2+6th? Bb+Eb+F+G are all there on the first and third, but it's a question in and of itself whether the notes of the first beat are the harmonic tones.
