Emily Carr studied art in San Francisco, London, and Paris, but her work was heavily influenced by the art she encountered - including the poles and figures of First Nations people. She became well known in Canada, and her focus (both in her paintings and her writings) on the damp forests of Vancouver Island. She was a brilliant standout whose work captured the Northwest with a kind of neo-impressionist energy, and a modern eye, and is considered one of the foundational artists of Canada.

Love this one. Not just the topic, but Knute, the photography, and editing are so beautiful.

Emily Carr wasn't just representing Victoria or Canada she was an artist of the Pacific Northwest and thus belongs to BC, Washington and Oregon more than she is a Canadian. She documented the first nations that lived along the Cascade region, not bound by borders or state laws. People in Washington have more in common with her than all of Canada.
