One of the things I like on Twitter
is when players send me pictures
that are a little different than other pictures.
One thing you can learn a lot from is your footwork,
especially when you look at the downswing.
The downswing really starts from the ground up,
you feet, knees, hips, they start to move.
When I look at a player's footwork,
one of the most common mistakes that I see
is that as they're coming into the golf ball,
their right foot comes up too much, like this.
Better ball strikers keep their right foot down longer.
The weight transfers from the inside of
their right heel to the left toe.
And it does this by rolling that right foot in
and kicking that knee in.
When you keep that foot down, it gives you a better chance
to hit the inside part of the ball.
The second thing that that does,
is it helps you stay in your posture better.
When you see players that are coming up
with their foot like this, they're
generally raising up out of their posture as well,
and it's taking all their room away
to get the golf club to come down from the inside.
So by keeping the right foot down longer,
it allows you to hit the inside part of the golf ball,
it also gives you a better chance to
keep your posture coming through the shot.
So, work on that footwork, rolling that foot,
that'll get you coming from the inside,
transferring your weight over to the left side,
get those hips bumping forward.
You'll become a better ball striker
if you start your downswing from
the ground up, the proper way.

I saw this in your Golf Digest "One move to better contact" page, and it helped me a lot. I was struggling with fat shots and this idea of pushing off the back foot a little moved me into the right spot, got everything forward and what a relief. thank you

I disagree... Look at Justin Thomas and Lexi Thomson and now Tiger’s new swing. They all that there foot up at impact and they do come up. That’s how they get there power tho. By “vertical launching”. They use the ground to get there power. Don’t get me wrong they of course use there hips but the hips and ground combined you power.
