Anne Boleyn played a pivotal role in shaping English history by pushing King Henry VIII towards the Reformation. While Henry sought the Pope’s approval to divorce Catherine of Aragon, Anne encouraged him to read Obedience of a Christian Man — a controversial book that would influence Henry’s attitude towards the Church. The consequences of Anne’s daring act echoed throughout the Tudor dynasty and reshaped England forever.

Do you think that Anne Boleyn's influence on British history has been underplayed?

I wish I had a History teacher like you in primary school, Lucy Worsley, intelligent, audacious and beautiful.

Before he left the church, Henry wrote a treatise in defense of Catholicism. The Pope was so impressed he awarded Henry the title Defender of the Faith. To this day the British Royal Family includes it among their hereditary titles. And without any apparent sense of irony. Gotta love those Brits!

Both Anne and Lady Jane Grey were more thoughtful about and understanding of the serious causes of the Reformation. Their spiritual sides have generally been ignored in popular representations of them. It’s remarkable that they were as well educated on matters spiritual, given the limited opportunities usually afforded women, even of their class and rank. Both of them were tragic pawns in a Tudor chess game for dynastic power.

Hmm. Well this makes me appreciate her more. But I also still really like Catherine of Aragon. You know who I don't like? Henry VIII.

I love when Lucy inserts herself into the scene.

It's very creative.
King and Anne talking at the back and you're whispering trying not to destruct their conversation. Clever.

Anne is the most fascinating, enigmatic, bold, intellectual person of the Tudor court.

Yes, it seems Anne's importance has been understated, certainly during my education. Thanks.

Anne Boleyns main problem that I found with her is the cruelty she agreed with against his first wife. They separated Queen Catherine of Aragon, from her daughter & celebrated when she died. I believe that Anne Boleyn was falsely accused which lead to her death. But she perished under the Kings tyranny that she supported originally. King Henry eventually suffered his own demise under horrific conditions due to his health. Her daughter went on to become one of Britains greatest Monarchs.

He murdered her. Her letter to the king from the tower tells you all you need to know - only someone wholly innocent could write a letter like that.

It was Anne Boleyn that inspired my interest in British History 45 years ago when Anne of a Thousand Days was a huge deal. I think she's the only reason we know so much about HVIII, but you have to take into account that different historians have different takes on things. In David Starkey's series about Elizabeth I he says that "Anne was all but airbrushed from her mind.." which is absurd. Did he not know that E's court was packed with her Boleyn relatives? Did he not know about her ring with the miniature of Anne? I have since learned that Starkey is pretty biased. He has produced some really great documentaries, but they shouldn't be taken as the ultimate authority. I have slowly learned that no historian is going to provide a complete picture. I am only an amateur history buff, but I would love to go to the National Archives in London to read the documents. I would love to go to Hever Castle and do some real scholarship.

We’re watching Season 1 of Wolf Hall right now. This adds insight and texture to the drama. Claire Foy plays Ann as having considerable intelligence and character.

I’ve always felt an immense sense of pity and sorrow for Anne Boleyn. The accusations of infidelity and adultery against Anne made by Henry VIII were slanderous and untrue. It was a convenient way for Henry to annul the marriage so he could marry Jane Seymour who could bear him a child and male heir. It was an awful misdeed and action made by Henry.
