The Ozone layer is a region in the Earth’s stratosphere that absorbs the sun’s ultraviolet rays, shielding the planet from the harmful radiations which can cause skin cancer. In the 1980s, scientists discovered that the ozone layer was being depleted and a hole was created over the Antarctica due to man-made activities. Therefore, in 1987, Montreal Protocol treaty was signed and use of CFC's was banned by the world. As a result, recent data shows that last year (2019), Antarctic ozone hole hit its smallest peak since 1982.
But in March 2020, another big hole was created in the ozone layer but this time over the Arctic region. And interestingly, it has somehow healed itself, nearly just a month after it was created. If you wanna know more about it, then checkout this amazing video.
So, recovery of the ozone holes has progressed at a rate of about 1% to 3% a decade since 2000, meaning the ozone layer over the northern hemisphere and mid-latitudes should heal completely by the 2030s but recovery of the Antarctic hole, which is the biggest hole till now, will take even longer and is likely to heal fully by 2070s, if current rates are maintained.
