I'm a banner towing pilot, and u think you guys should scale it up, and use ZP fabric.( same fabric used for parachute)for the banner. Good luck

I towed a 47 character banner behind a modified Cessna 172 in thee 80's. Here are a couple of suggestions. 1) hook the grappling hook to the aircraft so you can do a normal takeoff and release the hook after takeoff. 2) have a release mechanism to release the banner and the hook so you can do a normal landing. For your pickup, fly level just above the pickup line at half throttle. Just as the plane passes over the line pitch up and add full throttle. I never missed a pick up using that method.

I did this with the full size Apprentice. I installed a bomb-drop mechanism under the aft firewall, trying to get close to the CG so that the banner drag wouldn't induce any nose up tendencies. Fishing line through the bracket of the drop servo, cardboard pant hanger (dry cleaners) at the front of the banner, and the banner was a white, 13 gallon trash bag cut down the sides and laid out long-wise. Used a fishing weight to ballast the bottom so it'll fly vertical. I would take off with the banner attached, and then to land, I'd overfly the drop zone, drop the banner, and then one more around the pattern to land! Used it for my boys' little league baseball game! Awesome stuff!!

Our RC group at Blackrock RV Park in Brenda, Arizona started banner flying a few years ago. With considerable experimentation, we've ended up with thin white plastic kitchen garbage bags cut to about 6 inches wide x 6 feet long, lettering with large black permanent markers, harnessed to a weighted wire (similar to what you have done), and towed with about 10' of light string or mono-filament looped around the wings next to the fuselage and laid over the top of the elevator. The tow planes are hand launched, with surprising ease, avoiding the issue of hooking the banner in flight. With banners entitled "Don't Look Ethyl", "Old Pilots Rule", "Happy New Year", etc, we've had many laughs.

Guys, I've done banner tows before! Was thinking about doing one at flitefest, but I forgot to make a flitefest banner :/
You don't need to do the pickup wire at all (makes for better episodes though). Just leave enough length in the line
My banners have always been made out of plastic garbage bags with colored tape on as text to keep things light
TO GET THE BANNER TO STOP FLAPPING: you need to put more material on the ends like tassels so the usable part of the banner doesn't shake as much.
Great video, hope you guys keep up with the towing content!

Great job guys. Add the drag chute, work on your pickup system a little more and lay the banner in front of the pickup posts. Laying the banner out *in front* (and usually at 45 degrees of the line of flight) of the pickup posts and *backwards* actually creates a ton less drag to lift and doesn't drag it through the grass on it's way up. Watch really close how the big guys do it!

*Suggestion: The real banners often have small parachute(s) dragging from the back of the banner ... One at the top and one at the bottom corners. (And in the middle of wider banners) They're made from a light, open netting material to add a little resistance, but not enough drag to stop the operation of the tow plane. You might try that.*
*Or, for RC, you could try streamers instead of the parachute. Let us see what you come up with.*

I would like to thank everyone who signed my big timber. Andres, peter, josh Scott, Josh Bixler, Stephen, last but not least Alex.

Awesome to see you all review this plane since I just bought it as my first a month ago! No major mishaps so far and the thing is a blast to fly! SAFE was great to have starting out but I'm mostly flying with it off now. The lights are great for dusk flying and the flaps are really fun to play with. I just got back from doing some STOL take-off and landings on the side of a big hill at a local park. The FT and Afterhours RC podcasts are very helpful and I can't wait to get more into the hobby. Now I just need to decide which to get first, a Radian, big Timber, Tundra or something completely different. For now I'm having a lot of fun doing rolls, loops and even inverted flying with this little beast!

I just spent a week down the shore. It was so windy some of the days that the banner planes had to fly diagonally into the wind just to fly in a straight line. It was pretty cool seeing full sized planes crabbing along at a 45 degree angle.

I’ve been wanting to do this for three years but just never had the opportunity (up at the lake). I wasn’t sure how to weigh the bottom of the banner so it doesn’t just flop around willy-nilly... until now. 😎

Really cool. Use the bigger Timber next time and a whole lot bigger banner. HoHoHo 🎅

You need to attach small drag-shoots to the tail. Even several small strips of paper folded in half and glued to the end of the banner at the folds will help stabilize the banner.

Love to see you do this with a full size TImber or a Storch. This would be a great fun fly event for our club not to mention a chance to do some advertising.

Use a treble hook and cut the barbs off so it won’t snag in someone’s arm. Also there used to be a guy in the Kansas City area that had a good sized cub, and actually had a banner business, scaled down of course, and flew at bbqs, birthday parties, small to medium sized get togethers. He also used the same type of banner system like the real banners. Might want to see if you can get a closeup picture of a real banner, or better yet, see if you can find one in the area to go look at.

Yes. Try it on a bigger plane. What a great idea!

A simple man and a simple idea. Great job guys. Andres is quite the pilot

You're picking up your banners wrong. Lay them on the ground backwards so when the "snatch" occurs, you are only picking up the leading edge of the banner and the rest in a measured drag instead of pulling the whole banner weight on the first grab.

Love your channel, keep up the good work!

Nice! Maybe some wieght on the end would help with the flapping. Great work! Also in terms of your ad legality questions: you should look at rc blimp companies online, they do that kind of a thing for a living and would probably know a bit about the subject.

I have one of the umx timbers! They are awesome! I would recomend getting it if you want a small rc airplane. It has STOL and has the SAFE technologies.
