From day one of the war, I knew that Russia would never win this war. I was born and grew up during the Vietnam War and my dad fought the war from the beginning to the end, so I thought I knew a few things about war. Many people thought that Russia would win easily because it has bigger military and more modern weapons, if that’s the case then the United States would have won Vietnam War, where its military was much more powerful than that of Viet Cong. The problem with the US soldiers in Vietnam, and also with the Russians in Ukraine, is that they don’t know what they are fighting for. Sending soldiers to a war without a clear cause is a prelude for failure. Even if Russia was successful in occupying Kyiv and forced the Ukraine government into exile, they still could not win. Ukraine would form a resistance force and they have an ideal geographic condition to fight a guerrilla war. The western Ukraine border is backed by friendly countries (save Hungary) and they would provide a safe haven for the resistance force. Ukraine would get unlimited supplies from the West and wage an asymmetrical war for as long as it needed. Ukraine also has a clear and strong leadership, that’s something not every resistance force has. On the other side, Putin does not have unlimited time. If the war drags on for another few years, the Russian military may have enough and they will overthrow him, or he may be forced to step down.
