#shorts Scientists at the New Jersey Institute of Technology have discovered that the sun emits a repeating signal resembling a 'heartbeat' every 10 to 20 seconds. The signals are known as quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) and have been identified at the base of the electric current sheet in a solar flare located 3,106 miles above the sun's surface. The discovery could help to develop a deeper understanding of solar storms and how energy is released and dissipated in the sun's atmosphere during powerful explosions. Additionally, the scientists identified not one, but two signals in the flare, both likely originating from quasi-repetitive magnetic reconnections at the flare current sheet.
