Correction: The Weeknd wrote 7 songs on Take Care. Gave up a lot of his own material.

You forgot about the part that the weekend didn't get his full credit for helping him with the songs because he helped him with the whole album, not just a couple of songs

Signing with OVO is basically saying "how can drake exploit me for the next couple years then let my career burn out" e.g. PND

They would’ve made so much more great music together

now The Weeknd is the only one who can talk down to drake about numbers 😂

Tbh this is missing a lot of it and theres a lot more to it. Abel was much bigger than this vid gives him credit for before Drake, since he was actually decently well known in Toronto, even getting his first Mixtape as The Weeknd played in gas stations. Drake's team promoted him in a newsletter/review blog, which did get him some traction, and they proceeded to help each other out a ton. Drake is on two of Abel's early songs, and Abel had even more influence on Take Care than just the songs he sings on (he does main and/or backing vocals in like 4 or 5), not to mention all the influence Drake took. Abel did sign to republic, but he also did it under his own label of XO. This was all before Kiss Land, where Drake had another feature on the album, so things were pretty good. They even toured together, where there was a bunch of teasers of some kind of fusion of OVOXO, or at the very least references to more projects together. Anyways, this is all to say that theres a lot more going on here, and I know things got really muddy when friends of one of them would go at the other (mostly abel's friends and drake having beef), which even if never reciprocated from them, still can cause some shakiness. I feel like both people dont get enough credit in this conversation. Abel did a lot more for himself than people give him credit for, and Drake was genuinely supportive of his decision, even if he still did ultimately wish Abel was on the label (plus he has given Abel credit many many times, including praising his work and influence on Take Care, so im not sure if that tweet is some emotional spur of the moment thing or what). Anyways thats my yap, for those interested i recommend checking out a longer, more nuanced video to really get everything. Love the shorts as always goat 😎

The Weeknd was blowing up with 3 Mixtapes and touring the country before Drake started collaborating with him

The weeknd made a smart move by signing elsewhere, drake was not gonna allow him to become bigger than him and the weeknd was gonna be held down, now The Weeknd made XO and is bigger than drake

can you do a long vid on all this beef and diss tracks?

“Contribute” is an understatement. Drake begged The Weeknd to use HIS songs on Take Care. The Weeknd has voiced this before.

Abel was the one working for drake and making songs for him and he's the one that's supposed to be thankful for it? That's crazy. Like i get that drake gave him a chance but he also took way more from abel than what he gave back

No he was going to sign with Drake, until he figured out Drake was going to have him in a 360 deal. He wrote nearly half a album for Drake and got no credits. Now The Weekend has surpassed Drake in streaming and sales.

Seems like it would make sense for Weeknd to sign for Drake hes pop too

Drake & Nikki act like they weren’t he seeking like Jayz & always acting hateful when people see they’re just trying to pimp them. Wayne never takes credit for putting them on or their success. That’s why they stay in beef with every artist & Wayne state respected & admired never in conflict

They made a song in 2013. It’s called Live For.

Yo this is all cap. Weeknd was on the come up before 40 “discovered” him. His first few mixtapes were huge. From my understanding he agreed to let drake use a few of his songs but then drizzy stole a couple which rubbed him the wrong way especially if he’s gonna be signing with him. It’s Abel’s prerogative if he wants to sign or not. He found a better deal elsewhere and OVO obviously didn’t work hard enough to bring him in. Drake co-opts smaller artists music all the time but most of them one hit wonders. The weekends not one of them. Winners gonna win regardless
