The Munje Beach Management Unit (BMU) is a fishing village located in Kwale County on Kenya's South Coast. Recently, Munje BMU has gained attention for establishing the first successful octopus closure in the region, becoming a model for neighboring villages. This success has even inspired Mkwiro BMU to replicate a similar initiative.

However, the road to this achievement wasn't smooth. Back in 2014, an initial attempt at establishing the octopus closure failed due to poor leadership, governance issues, and weak enforcement of closure laws. Undeterred, the community tried again in 2021, this time focusing on stronger enforcement measures, improved leadership, and enhanced community awareness to foster ownership of the project. After years of perseverance, their efforts paid off when the first closure period was successfully implemented, leading to a fruitful opening in August 2023.

The BMU has since completed three successful harvests and is currently in its fourth closure season. In this video, the community shares their journey, the lessons they’ve learned, and the significant impacts the octopus closure has had on their marine environment and fishing outcomes.
