Infiniti G35 Steering Wheel, Air Bag, and Clock Spring (Spiral Cable) Removal

***WARNING***
Some people have reported that they needed their steering wheel angle sensor reset after replacing their clock spring. For a greater chance of avoiding this problem, please follow these two steps:

1) Make sure your steering wheel is at the 12 o'clock position and wheels are pointed straight ahead before you begin.

2) Also, the WHITE plug I mention in the video is how the steering wheel angle sensor connects to your car. Leave it plugged in like I did, just to be safer.

If your steering wheel angle sensor needs to be reset, the SLIP and VDC lights will come on and you'll likely need your car towed to a Nissan/Infiniti dealership. If you do need your sensor reset, try the Nissan Datascan II software and try to reset it yourself first. END OF WARNING.

My horn and steering wheel radio controls stopped working. They only worked when I turned my steering wheel past a certain point. That was the dead giveaway that my clock spring was bad.

In this video, I remove the air bag, steering wheel, and clock spring from a 2005 Infiniti G35. These may be the exact same steps with other Infinitis and Nissans, like the 350z.

Thank you for the guide! I was able to replace mine on 05 G35 without issues. Left the white plug hanging, no vdc lights.
To all, I recommend to replace only with a genuine clockspring part. Don't cheap out.

WARNING:  Be VERY careful pulling the steering wheel!!

Thanks for posting.  I used your overview to pull remove and replace (with a new one) the steering wheel on my GF's EX35.

Only problem:  I tugged on the steering wheel and it came RIGHT off, destroying the clock-spring when it came off.

Off to find a clock-spring now.

Word to the wise, don't ever bang, use a hammer, or any impact style puller to remove a steering wheel from the column. Doing so may result in damage to the steering column and steering column bearing. Use a proper puller, aka a compatible puller kit to remove and install the steering wheel. If you do not own a kit, then rent one from your local parts store  really cheap. The video above was flawless up to that point. I am a ASE certified Master Technician.

Thanks for this. My airbag light is on and does not clear with a reset. My mechanic said it is the clock spring, however, my steering wheel controls and horn all still work. I asked him about this and he said it could still be the clock spring. I'm skeptical but I might try to replace it and see.

And when re installing the airbag, seeing the airbag light flashing indicates a properly installed airbag. However if it does not go off or you get a warning indicator reading a airbag malfunction light, then something went wrong. As always, refer to manufacture instructions when dealing with airbag and steering column components because getting it wrong can get expensive very quickly

Great video. I had to replace the spiral cable and did not have any problem with the slip/vdc lights even though I disconnected everything.
Thanks

Great video, thank you so much. I have a question. I did it on my 2001 Nissan Maxima and works greats, but my  steering wheel is not straight. What should I do to get that fix. Do I need to re-do it all the steps? your help is appreciated.

Hmmmn... my radio controls and cruise controll buttons dont work on my steering wheel. Got the volume button to work once when turning the steering wheel in a funky position and slapping it up. Wonder if it's the clockspring.

I put a new clock spring in my 06 infiniti g35 sedan. It worked for a day, then my airbag light showed up and my horn stopped working along with all the steering wheel controls, any ideas ?

2005 G35 has the SLIP and VDC light and did not disconnect the white plug. Not sure if it happened bec the steering wheel was not precisely straight.
A Firestone mechanic cleared the steering angle sensor and charged a one time alignment $79.99.
Not sure what computer they use to reset the steering and doubt they used a Nissan Consult II. There must me a cheaper option? (Maybe pepboys or kwik kar)

Is a clock spring and steering angle sensor the same thing?  Horn not working (works when I lock the car using remote) on a 2007 Nissan armada.

How do I connect the horn? I drive with a replaced airbag. But it's just bolted in not connected so It will not work. No airbag or horn. I can do without an airbag but i need the horn. Please help.
