Generally, schools beat the love of learning and creativity out of most students.

“Man’s maturity: to have regained the seriousness that he had as a child at play.”

A paraphrase from a source I don't remember. " 'Serious' is what I am forced to do until I can be silly again."

"The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play."

My sister and I used to play with a small family of toys. We built houses for them, then a whole town with townspeople. As we got older it took on the look of scripted plays similar to what we were seeing on TV sitcoms at the time but we were writing the scripts. We carried on with this until we were actually far 'too old' but I see now that it was to live a bit of a didn't have much money, so these families we created could do what we could not: Live in big homes, go on impressive vacations, have jobs we would have liked to some day have, etc. I reached an age where I was a bit embarrassed looking back on this fantasy part of my life that perhaps carried on for too many years, But now, as a senior, I look back on this time as a bit of a haven from the unpleasantness at the time and the very difficult times that were yet to come.

"It was likely Plato who first recognized the educational value of play. In Book VII of Plato’s Republic, Socrates suggests that play is where education should begin: “Don’t use force in training the children in the studies, but rather play. In that way you can better discern what each is naturally directed towards” (537a)."

It’s judgement and the fear of criticism that stifles creativity.

It's a habit really. The world wants to force you to into serving it, through acquiring hard skills, adopting behaviors, etc.

Creativity is simply you keeping your inner child alive within you.

For many decades now, the educational system has been defective by design and not by error.

Solitude. It's not sufficient to foster creativity but it is necessary. If Newton hadn't exiled himself from London he'd be one more scribbler among the lot. Euripides wrote his plays in a CAVE.

Truth. Sometimes adults try and can't play anymore. Becoming a goofy older person is a blessing...

I can think of few people whose thoughts on creativity I would like to hear as much as John Cleese. Imagine how many people, for how many hours, benefited from Mr. Cleese's creativity. I, for one, always looked forward to his next work and benefited from the experience. Laughter truly is often the best medicine and John Cleese is a doctor with few peers. He is truly a giant among those in his profession. In his way, he has made the world a better place.

When the bell rings, line up, file in, answer to a register, fill in the work sheets, learn your tables, do this, do that, even talking is a directed activity.
You have 15 minutes playtime then back in we go, learning to work to a timetable that delivers a curriculum thought up by a panel of professionals.
This is the woorld of compulsory education. Only convicts are similarly institutionalised and have good strong fences around their places of incarceration.

i learned during the pandemic
that creativity is an animal you must feed.
stop feeding it and it stops growing.
what feeds it?
following my curiosity,
not letting anything stop me from
figuring out something i got interested in.
i was off work for a yr n a half.
i should have went back to work after a yr,
but i was busy playing n learning.
i wrote a really cool program during this time.
i call it an ncptr.
it incepts whatever i describe
to the degree and level i describe it.

The opposite question is: How can you best KILL creativity? Destroy it? Make it impossible? Society has not only answered this question, but implemented countless methods to reach this goal.

Shiva supposedly said _'Play, gracious one! For the universe is an empty shell wherein your mind frolics infinitely'_

And I concur, when playing the guitar just for the sake of playing it I have most fun, I experiment, and explore, and discover many lovely musical ideas because of it.

This is why I loved doing improv. It's all about playing with your team members. The sense of freedom and fun is exhilarating.
