It's carbon fiber wheels, trunk mounted spoiler, and rear delete helps to shed weight. Is this road course assassin the Shelby to choose over the upcoming 2020 GT500? Find out all the details!

Raiti is the only one that can review a car more than one time and each time be as interesting as the first time. Great job! Great camera work also! Ford needs to hire you to showcase their cars.

While you've pointed out some cool cosmetic and performance things, the 500 will eat the 350R for breakfast. The 350 was developed with 5-6 year old technology, basically improved upon things year by year. The 500 has been developed by the same team that made the 2017 GT that won Le Mans... again! For the guys who needs to "hold" a shifter because they "know how to drive" are just showing a lack of understanding in racing these days. Why? Lewis Hamilton current top F1 driver, and every other professional driver is using the same kinds of automatic and paddle shifting systems that's in the 500. Like Ferrari, McLaren, Lambos, Pagani, Bugatti etc. are mainly using that type of transmissions and gearboxes, the most advanced systems that produce the fastest shifting times.

Then when you figure in the more advanced steering, breaking, handling and grip than the 350R plus the superior cooling, bigger supercharger with a 700 plus (755 HP) motor the GT 500 will be doing much better lap times than the Demon, Redeye, Camaro and competing with the top GM car the ZR1 Vette but for around 80K instead of 120K. In a straight line the Demon and Redeye will have a better 1/4 mile by a few tenths, but not from a rolling start at 40-50-60 mph. The Shelby Mustang GT 500 will be a beast and the best bang for the buck in the sub 100K range.

Now take all of that and think about a GT 500 "R"? Just like the difference between the 350 and 350R they'll tweek it a bit and for several grand more you'll get 4-7% better performance.

Bottom line for me:
GT 350 R = $60-65K, 5.2L super V8, 526 HP, 6 speed man, 3.9 sec 0-60, 12.1 sec 1/4 mile, top mph 173, breaking 70-0 152 ft
5-6 year old technology providing good grip, handling, breaking, cooling, with good acceleration through all 6 gears.

GT 500 = $80-85K(est), 5.2L super V8, 700+ (755 est) HP, 7 speed auto, 3.5 sec 0-60(est), 10.9 sec 1/4 (est), top mph 180 (governed), breaking 70-0 less than 152 ft. Current Le Mans winning tech providing even better grip, handling, breaking, cooling, with faster acceleration through 7 automatic gears for a higher curve in the 75-150 mph range and 30 mph of headroom.

If you're gonna spend 60-65 already why not another 15-20 and get the top of the line machine instead of the 2nd best?

Ultimately, this is an amazing time, similar to the 70's muscle car era with the big three all putting out their own beasts again. But now there are more venues to drag, roll race and even track race which are much safer and legal. Whether you like the 350 or 500 they're both great machines and offer the most bang for buck for track racing. Dodge has built an awesome machine in the Demon for drag racing and the ZR1 is competing just as good or better in track racing as the least expensive exotics; Ferrari 488 GTB, 458 Italia, Mclaren 570S or lower and even the Lambo Huracan 610 for only a third or half the cost. If that doesn't scream out American Muscle Cars again then I don't know what will.

Personally I want to see how well the 500 does on the track with the Vette and the Italians... thanks have fun and enjoy!

I love your passion about the GT350 and the GT350R's. I finally got mines after years of waiting for the right time in my life to get one.... I bought the R! I was on the fence for a long time about just getting a GT350, because i thought i might of needed the leather option because i have back problems. But once i test drove the R and the 350 back to back... the R made me forget about herniated discs real fast haha. That an all your reviews over the years have definitely helped! This is a car thats going to go down in the history books as one of the best ever driving experiences it gave!

Great review Joe. The carbon fiber option looks great. The GT500 will be amazing I’m sure but given the lacking 3rd pedal - the 350R is my preference. 72k would be a nice number for what you’re presenting. Problem is it takes more to buy it.
