CAMEL RIDES— are they safe for these lovely animals?
Let me bravely start the Camel Trek posts with this.
Link in bio for a good article about this and how you can support the well-being of these camels 💕
The concern for the health and safety for camels being used for the tourism industry remains a top topic. And I am all up for this, I love animals (I have my own pets since I was a kid), and I am against animal abuse in any form. But I do also believe in balance and the natural cycle of life.
So let’s read through 2 important facts (sources at the end):
✔️Camels are domesticated animals and have been used for transportation, both for humans and trade since the early days.
✔️Unlike elephants, whales, or dolphins, again, they are domesticated. Like horses, cows, sheeps, pigs, etc. Horses are ridden on, and there is no issue with that unless..
(Here is where problems may arise and this is what you, as a responsible tourist should look out for)
🛑Any animal, in zoos, parks, in monitored wildlife environments, or even at home, should be well-looked after. If this isn’t the case, then there is a cause for concern. Never ride a camel, or horse, if they look unwell, disabled, or malnourished.
🛑If the owners/herders yell at them, slaps a stick on them to make them stand, or anything that suggests they mistreat the animals, opt to not push through the activity. You can also politely raise your concern to them, your tour guide/company, or the authorities.
Herders and a lot of cities rely on tourism as a main source of income. Oftentimes, their profit gives them enough resources to provide for the animals they own. Here’s a few more ideas on how we can maintain a healthy balance between tourism and animal-welfare:
✅ Don’t haggle (if prices are already fair). This sustains the needs of the animals and the owners.
✅ Research the tour company/guide offering the rides. Make sure they comply to ethical business standards.
✅ Donate to animal shelters or charities.
✅ Do not overload the animal you are riding on. According to a source, a camel’s max capacity is 150kg, but of course we don’t want to take advantage of that.
Let’s also hope that one day Animal-welfare laws will be enforced all over the world. 🙏🏻
Ultimately, researching and sharing helps educate more people. So let’s do our part!
Share to support awareness!💙
